How to Improve your Spiritual health(Part 4) - Local assembly

How to Improve your Spiritual health- Local assembly

by Toyosi Adegunle and Bibi Babatunde-Ikotun

So we've finally come to the end of the spiritual health series and we hope you've learnt a lot. The last but not the least of the five pillars is your LOCAL ASSEMBLY also known as your local church. I’ve heard many people try to justify not being a part of a local church, and what they mostly tell you is, “as long as I study the Word, pray and commune with God, I’m okay”.

Well, yes, there’s nothing wrong in doing this, I mean, during the COVID lockdown, we were all home, fellowshipping. Many other countries are still unable to gather physically as a local church but they are making it work.

When you think of LOCAL ASSEMBLY, it’s not just about being a church member of a physical church (yes, it is too) but it is mostly about:

  • Being a part of a family
  • Being intentional about fellowshipping with brethren
  • Being submitted to the leadership
  • Being a disciple

Regardless of the pandemic, we all fellowshipped with brethren around us. Imagine if the Church was just about attending a physical space where people gathered every Sunday or during weekly services. It is really more than that.

Hebrews‬ ‭10:25‬ ‭NKJV‬‬  says “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Do not neglect the gathering of believers unto exhortation and growth. You can’t do this life alone, you can’t walk this path alone, you need brothers and sisters to strengthen you, edify you, pray for and with you, you need a spiritual leader who knows and says the mind of God. Fellowship also involves eating together, playing together, gisting and getting to know each other like you'd do with your biological siblings. Please don't let the devil prevent you from enjoying all the benefits of a local assembly.

Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV) So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.

Whatever gifts or talents that you've received from God, also use them to build up your local church. Get involved in the service teams. If what you're gifted is unavailable in your church, you can reach out to your leaders and have a team formed.

To summarize, don't let anything stop you from getting involved, this includes church hurt. We have the capacity to love and forgive thanks to the Holy Spirit. If you find yourself struggling, ask for help. Help from your community, help from your leaders and most importantly help from God. The church is important, it is part of God's design for your spiritual health. We're not created to do Christianity alone, it's not an isolated faith. We are not alone, we have a family in the body of Christ.

We have treated the five pillars of spiritual growth - PRAYER, WORD, FRIENDS/PEOPLE, CONTENT & LOCAL ASSEMBLY, what is your favourite?

  1. I found it difficult picking one as all work together. I will say Friends and people. If you surround yourself with Godly people, their presence will always make you accountable or act as a check in your spirituality. This is the reason behind fellowshiping. Iron sharpens Iron they say

What does it mean to be complete in Christ?

What does it mean to be complete in Christ? When you look at yourself, what do you see? Do you see someone who is imperfect and lacking in many areas? Do you sometimes find yourself thinking these thoughts? God is angry with me. I’m too dirty and damaged for Him to accept me. Why would God want to be with me when I’m a hot mess. Let me give you a secret, it doesn't matter how you feel or what you think. All that matters is what God has said in His word. His word says you are Complete in Christ! You are whole! Nothing missing, nothing lost, nothing broken! This is not by your deeds or something you are on your own. This is because you're in Christ!  Are you in Christ? Colossians 2:9-10 (NKJV) For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead [a]bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all [b]principality and power. Colossians 2:9-10 (TPT) For he is the complete fullness of deity living in human form. 10 And our own completeness is now found in him . We are co

Do’s and Don’ts of a spiritual fast

Do’s and Don’ts of a spiritual fast  By Bibi Babatunde-Ikotun Hello, welcome to my blog. If you clicked on this link it’s either you’re fasting already or are planning to fast. The good thing is you’re planning to have an effective fast by seeking all the information you can get on this. I won’t waste much of your time and I’ll get into it. Don’ts of fasting -  Have a Transactional mindset : A long time ago I thought fasting was about doing something so God will bless you. This led to a string of disappointment because I never got what I wanted from him. After all, I deprived myself for God but He didn’t do his part. We must first understand that fasting is not to move God, it’s to help us align with the move he’s made. The bible says in Ephesians 1.3 (NKJV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. God is always on our side, we need not deal with him on a transaction basis. We fast to tra
